Requiem For The Grand Old Party

The Republican Party in Westchester is in dire shape as further evidenced by Assemblyman Mike Spano’s defection to the Democrats. I write about this in tomorrow’s (July 12) column.
Needless to say, it’s not good for democracy that the once proud GOP has been brought to its knees.
One-party rule ensures only one thing: corruption will reign. It doesn’t matter which party is in control. The old adage of absolute power corrupts absolutely applies to both Democrats and Republicans. So we now have the Democrats running everything. Some Democrats are speaking of this with the crazed spirit of Manifest Destiny.
I wasn’t able to work into the column a bizarre quote from Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, D-Greenburgh who said the Democratic Party goal was to be number one “which it now is top to bottom, coast to coast, north and south, east and west—and that’s the way it should be.”No, that’s not the way it should be.
Unless, of course, we want a dictatorship.Advertisement

Phil Reisman is a veteran journalist and native of Westchester County. He began his career in 1977 as the head copy boy of a startup New York City newspaper that quickly went belly up. Reisman was not to blame for the newspaper's failure, or so he claims.

We all know the political pendulum swings both ways. Right now it’s in favor of the democrats. It will shift again .The real co-dictatorship is in the White House right now.
As you might have noticed from my postings, I enjoy a discussion, as long as it stays at least semi-logical, doesn’t involve name calling, and has a for-the-people bent to it. You kind of hew to that line, I think, just from your own personal inclination, and it makes for good talk.
Go ahead and make all of us into Democrats, (or theocrats, or shit-in-a-hats) and all discussion will cease. The myths that drive one very troubled national party, will be imported as truths, used as local truths, and will end up bringing the house down around our ears, hereabouts, before anybody notices they’ve been exploited.
Answer me…. would you like Nancy Pelosi to be NYS Governor? Would we gain from her strained rhetoric, her private 757 jet, and her anti-Americanism? I know she thinks that with Bush destroyed, somebody will be better off…. it’s just that I struggle to grok if its just Pelosi that’ll be better off, or just Pelosi, Iran, and Congressman Murtha. Would it be within her grasp to destroy America, just to get to Bush? I don’t put it past her, or 95% of all Democrats.
(I personally feel that is exactly what they’ve done these years since 2004.)
Now we have no counter voice, no reality check, just the failed Cuomo junior, and the clueless A. Spano, making common cause against me being able to run my air conditioner, and still avoid debtor’s prison.
‘Tis a worry, Mr. R…... a definite worry.
Isn’t it amazing that Pelosi and the democrats have been systematically destroying America to get at Bush since 2004, when the republicans were in charge of congress, the senate and the White House ? Perhaps the democrats should take note of that in 2008. Though I’m SURE the republicans would NEVER use such dirty tactics against Clinton. America’s a big bloke. He can take it. It’s just the party system that gets shaken up every now and then. PLUTONIUM IS FOREVER!
We already under a totalitarian leadership. Its the next step.
I agree with Ball—it is a pendulum. What’ll haopen is that the extreme wing of the Democratic Party will alienate everybody, just as the far-right did on the Republican side—- and bang!
As for Steve C’s comment…I think the next terrorist strike here will be the ultimate test of the strength of the consitution. It’s not totalitarian yet, but we’re heading in that direction.
