Look Out For Gas Scam

June
2

Mike Reynolds, an ex-cop and observer of the Westchester County scene,  passed on a warning about a new ripoff in this age of $4 a gallon gasoline. Even if it’s an urban legend, it’s still plausible.

Apparently a woman said her son discovered that his his license plate was missing and reported the theft to police. He was told that crooks are stealing plates to get free gas. They put the stolen plates on their own cars, fill the tanks at service stations, then flee without paying.

Spotting the pump-and-run, the station owners will report the license plate numbers to cops who can only trace the thefts to the innocent, unsuspecting owners of the plates.

It’s the age we live in.

This is one of those urban legends that come true in real life because some unsavory types read it in a blog somewhere.

    But, y’know….thanks.
