Post Office Named After Opera Man Merrill

You can do a lot worse in life than have a post office named after you. That was the honor bestowed upon the great Metropolitan Opera star and honorary New York Yankee Robert Merrill.
The other day, the U.S. Postal Service dedicated the Wykagyl Post Office in New Rochelle in honor of Merrill, who was a New Rochelle resident for many years. He died in 2004.
Even those who never attended an opera in their lives probably knew the gregarious Merrill who annually sung the National Anthem on opening day at Yankee Stadium. Among those who attended the dedication were former Yankee players Roy White and Mike Torrez.
Also there was U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison and Merrill’s widow, Marion.
The featured speaker was none other than the silver-maned legend of local radio, Bill O’Shaughnessy, who sent a press release via e-mail as well as photographs of the event showing his favorite person in the world—himself! The O-man told the noontime crowd that he once inquired of the famous baritone: “Who was the greatest tenor, Pavarotti or Placido Domingo?…Merrill, without missing a beat said, ‘That’s easy…FRANK SINATRA!’ ”
