We’re going to “crowd source” this one.. A Somers woman is upset over a two percent special assessment that’s been tacked onto to her electric c bill.
If you can explain this, please post a reply. In the meantime, I’m going to read my next Con Ed bill very carefully.
Here is her e-mail to me in full.
I know you are a “down county” person and so you are probably a Con Ed customer. I am not sure if Con Ed is doing what NYSEG is doing to us northerners and I wanted to make you aware.
Last month I received an insert to my NYSEG bill colored bright yellow to ensure it stood out. The memo states :
“As required by state law, effective July 1, 2009, utilities must collect a special state assessment from all customers for the state’s general fund. through March 2014.
This assessment, included in the delivery charge on your bill, amounts to an annual bill increase of approximately 2%. (2%?!?!?!?!?!?!?!)
All money collected through this assessment is passed to the state. NYSEG makes no profit on this assessment…..
Phil, are they kidding?!?!?!?!? How come no one is in an uproar about this? Are you aware? Are my neighbors reading their mail? I am so upset that Albany could get away with this at all and the fact that I have not seen anything in the paper about this is even more upsetting.
I am a huge fan of your column and just wanted to see if you had any interest in making more people aware of this situation.
I plan to write to every elected creep I can find in Albany and demand that this assessment be repealed. Thanks for any help you can provide.
