I was mixing baseball with politics in a conversation the other day with a fellow ink-stained wretch when it suddenly occurred to me that there were four guys with the last name Nixon who at one time in their careers played for the Boston Red Sox. You have to be a baseball fan to know this, and probably a collector of baseball cards as well. Alas, there wasn’t a Dick Nixon among them.
Trot Nixon, the most recent of the Boston Nixons, had a sort of shifty look as well as Nixonian 5 O’Clock stubble.
Last but not least was the late righthander Willard Nixon who pitched for the Sox back in the 1950s. He was known as a “Yankee Killer” because he frequently managed to beat the Bronx Bombers.
I’ll always have soft spot in my heart for the Four Nixons of Boston, though. It’s a shame we don’t have them to kick around anymore.
