Bernice Spreckman has been a Westchester County legislator since 1996, but she was mostly known for only one thing: Her propensity to switch political parties as often as most people change their socks.
But this year, she got 15 minutes of fame on the world stage when she and a group of fellow senior citizens from Yonkers got stranded for a couple of days off the coast of Mexico in a foundering Carnival Cruise ship. She survived the ordeal as did the others who were part of the trip she had organized in her role as chairwoman of the county’s Generational, Cultural and Ethnic Diversity Committee. Returning home with her husband Harry, she was dubbed, the “Unsinkable Bernice.”
Now she’s sending out a “Happy Holidays!” card with a Titanic theme. That’s Bernice and Harry making like they’re Leonard DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
