Standing Watch

December
8

(Anthony Coschigano of New Rochelle sent me this poem. It was written by Jeff Giles, a Navy serviceman in Iraq.)

A DIFFERENT CHRISMAS POEM

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside [...]

The Ossining Convicts? Maybe Not So Far-fetched

December
7

The team mascot for Ossining schools used to be the Indian. Then the squishy wimp-ocracy, i.e. the state Education Department, shoved a politically correct edict down the school district’s throat and the mascot was changed to RiverHawk.

Now, it’s changed again. As we’ve reported at lohud.com and in The Journal News it’s now the “O,” short [...]

Slipping In a Salary Raise

December
6

You can always count on the politicians to try and slip in a pay hike for themselves right after election day. Last year, that was the gambit of the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

This year, it’s the New Rochelle City Council.

Contained in the proposed city budget is a $22,000 pay raise for the part-time mayor [...]

Is This Sexist?

December
4

Gee, I don’t think so.

But Peekskill Democrats are raging over the “I Dream of Jeanie” image that appears on the city Republican’s Web Site.

I’m merely reproducing it. You decide.

The two dancers in balloon pants and halter tops are supposed to be Drew Claxton and Mary Foster, two Democratic members of the Peekskill City [...]

Weapons of Mass Drunkeness.

November
28

What kind of trend is this? Two more mommies, both from Putnam County, were arrested in separate incidents for drunk driving and for endangering the welfare of their children who were car passengers.

One of them was driving an SUV, so one may presume that she was “safety” conscious, in a weird sort [...]

The Great Copper Theft

November
27

Over the long holiday weekend a friend of mine who lives in a very nice house in a very nice Yonkers neighborhood told me a story of an audacious crime: The copper leaders and gutters on her very nice house were stripped clean from their bearings.

The thief performed this noisy operation while she and her [...]

O.J.’s Book

November
22

It’s just a matter of time before O.J. Simpson’s aborted “If I Did It” surfaces through the mysterious network of the underground. Personally, Im looking forward to looking at it.

I purposely said, “looking” and not “reading.” Screeds like this aren’t read. They can only be examined like specimans under a microscope.

Evil is worthy of a [...]

Yes, He Really Said It

November
17

Newly deposed state Sen, Nick Spano was close to his loyal constituents, but judging from his concession speech yesterday maybe he was, uh, a little too close. He slipped a couple of unintentional funnies at us.

Roll the tape!

FUNNY-ONE
“I have no disappointments at all. This was such a great campaign. I traveled all across Westchester County. [...]

Watch Jenkins Run

November
16

Now that Andrea Stewart-Cousins has pretty much wrapped it up as the new state senator in the 35th District, who will run for her seat on the Westchester County Board of Legislators?
The money here is on Ken Jenkins, the current chairman of the Yonkers Democratic Committee and a political commentator for a certain cable-TV network.
Jenkins [...]

Should I Have Said Shriners Instead?

November
16

Oops, I angered the Rotary Club.

I was only trying to describe the jolly Republican Chris Callaghan, who ran and lost the race for state comptroller…and in a recent column I came up with the thought that he reminded me of a Rotararian at an Oktoberfest.
This was not meant to besmirch the hard [...]
